Buckets
Create a bucket, fill it, and keep its contents under control.
A bucket is one S3 bucket with one public endpoint. The name is globally unique across AnythingCloud while the bucket exists. Every bucket is created under your AnythingCloud storage identity, so the S3 gateway records your account as its owner.
Create a bucket
- Open Object storage and choose Create bucket.
- Enter a name. Names are 3–63 characters of lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens. The name becomes the endpoint. These names are reserved:
admin,api,assets,cdn,edge,files,mail,smtp,static,www. - Choose Pay as you go (no storage cap, billed continuously) or a Monthly plan with a storage quota.
- Choose whether reads are public, then create the bucket.
The bucket page opens on the object browser. The right sidebar shows the endpoint, bucket usage, storage plan or cap, and access state.
Names and uniqueness
The bucket name is the public hostname, so it must be DNS-safe. Names are lowercase, start and end with a letter or digit, and may contain hyphens. A name that is already used by another member is rejected. The generated endpoint is:
https://NAME.s3.anything-cloud.com
Renaming a bucket is available in Settings. S3 cannot rename a bucket, so AnythingCloud copies the current version of every object into a new bucket, updates the account policy, then removes the old bucket. Older versions are not copied, but the new bucket keeps versioning enabled. Links that use the old name stop working. Custom hosts routed to the bucket follow the new name automatically.
Upload files
Open a bucket and choose Upload. The dialog accepts one or more files, either through the picker or by dragging them onto the drop zone. Uploads go into the folder you are currently viewing; each file shows its own progress and result. The per-object size limit still applies (currently 100 MB through the console).
Console uploads count toward the bucket's plan quota. S3 API and worker writes are not quota-checked, so they can take a plan bucket over its quota. If the bucket is paused, the upload is rejected with an error.
Folders
S3 has no real directories; a folder is a key prefix. AnythingCloud creates
a zero-byte marker ending in / when you choose
New folder, then lists matching prefixes as folders.
Breadcrumbs move between levels. Deleting a folder removes every object under
that prefix after a confirmation prompt.
ETags and object details
The object table shows a shortened ETag. Open the info button on any row to see the full key, size, modified time, full ETag, and the object URL. The Copy buttons put the ETag or URL on your clipboard. ETags are the storage checksum, not a guarantee that two files have identical bytes.
Delete objects
The trash button deletes one object after confirmation. Deleting an object
does not delete older versions when versioning has been enabled. A signed
link created before the delete still has a valid signature, but a request
for the deleted key returns 404 NoSuchKey.
Versioning
Open Settings and turn on Keep previous versions. Every subsequent write keeps the old object as a version. From an object's details, choose Show versions to list versions, restore one, or delete one. Restoring a regular version copies it back as the latest version. Removing a delete marker exposes the version underneath it.
Suspending versioning stops creating new versions but leaves existing ones in place. Old versions stay readable until you delete them. The hourly billing scan measures current object bytes, so it does not add old versions to the storage total.
Bucket limits
Each member starts with the site default, currently five buckets. Open Settings in the Cloud sidebar, choose Manage limit, enter the limit you need and why, then submit it. An admin can approve a custom limit or reject the request with a note. An approved limit replaces the default for your account.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Buckets per member | 5 by default; request an increase from Settings. |
| Storage | Pay as you go has no cap. Plans include 5, 100, or 250 GB. |
| Console upload | Up to the configured object limit, currently 100 MB per file |
| S3 single PUT | Up to 5 GB; multipart uploads are not enabled |
| Object name | Up to 512 characters, no leading slash |
For programmatic access, continue with the S3 API guide.
